What happened yesterday was this:

I'd planned to spend the evening crashed on the couch watching reruns of House. We've had an extremely eventful few weeks and with the Eugene 1/2 marathon and 5-hr drive home on Sunday, I just wanted a rest.

So when Justin pulled up the Seattle PI website and told me the crew of The Deadliest Catch was signing books at Barnes & Noble, I said we could probably skip it. Too much standing and too many crowds.

But when he wondered aloud whether the captains would sign the Deadliest Catch-punchline PVP comic my interest was a little piqued. That WOULD make an interesting (and frameable!) souvenir.

Before we decided whether or not to drive over to the U. Village, Justin emailed Scott Kurtz, the artist of PVP, ostensibly to ask if he'd like a signed copy too, but to also inquire about a high-res version of the image.

Scott's hilarious reply came back in minutes. I don't have it on hand, but it said something like, "Oh my God yes, I would love that. I'm in Seattle right now. Where are they?" We sent him the info and he shot back, "I'm on my way. Find me when you get there."

He was in Seattle? Wh.. what? And on his way? What the hell were chances of that!

As it turns out, he'd just flown in for the Emerald City ComiCon (this weekend) and was staying in the U District near the Penny Arcade office.

So we met up at B&N and Scott seemed happily refreshed that we were normal and not freaky stalker types. I told him I'd try harder next time.

We brought several printed copies of the comic and picked up some books for ourselves and friends. After an hour and a half in line, we met the DC captains, who loved the comic.

The Cap'ns were happy to sign stuff and pose for photos, though obviously glad that the line was almost finished.

Really, the best part wasn't meeting the crew face-to-face, but watching them just do their thing and interact with fans over the course of the evening.

During a break, Captains John and Andy came over to mingle with the folks in the line and answered some of our (stupid) questions. Yes, they do like crab. Yes, they do eat crab on the boats. And Opilio crab is actually more commonly known as "Snow Crab."

After the signing, we had a few drinks with Scott, who kindly drew us some purty pictures.

(Yeah... That IS the Penny Arcade "fruit fucker.")
