((reunion))
by Kat
I'm off to Michigan until next Tuesday to attend my cousin's wedding. It'll be an interesting reunion with a part of my family with whom I don't communicate very well, due to their rather conservative views. I'll try to keep a zen mindset (or alternate between meditative and bringin down some west-coast justice for my ho-mo homies... (that's you, Bubbly!)) and hopefully the whole "fiasco" (I predict the reunion will be a fiasco, though it may not be) will serve to give me greater appreciation for the diversity and acceptance in my Seattle community. Fuckin' heathens that we are.

[Speaking of hedonistic West Coast activities, last weekend the SEOmoz crew and some significant others ran the NARAL pro-choice fundraiser 5K. I ran easy and beat my best time without effort: 27:53!]

Because I think there aren't nearly enough parantheticals in this blog entry (and there aren't, obviously, if you're still reading), let me just say that I may (or may not) write from the great plains because (and this is one of many reasons) my circumstances will lack (what? lack what? blood sacrifices to satan?) modern internet connections. (Or. Maybe they won't.)

Maybe, and just maybe - because there are no guarantees of anything, if you go to your family reunion and practice the acceptance and tolerance and love you show your ho-mo-homies instead of predicting fiasco, you might have the time of your life. A lot stranger things have happened and not only would you enjoy yourself, but your positivity might be refreshing for those you're wary of. You've got it going on, so be a gift and not a grouch. Believe it or not, your choice of attitude often helps make or break results in life.

Attitude is indeed everything, but this is Numine's blog. She has the right to express her doubts and opinions, perhaps even as a way to reflect upon the upcoming situation so that she can act in a favorable way amongst her family.

Since this isn't your blog, since you don't know anything about her family, and since you are too chicken to even use a handle, why not mind your own business? Why meddle in things that you don't know anything about?

Sometimes, you are pleasantly surprised at family events you've been less than pumped about... but usually (in my experience), you're exactly right about how you think it's going to turn out. So while "Anon" (very original screen name there btw!) may be on to something though, you're more than likely right because it's your family, and you have seen how they interacted in the past!

Have fun anyway. Stop by North Dakota on your way home. We have the modern Intarnets and EVERYTHING.

Yep, we're having a pretty good time, if stressful!

Maybe, just maybe, anon, you should try not being such a huge douche to people on the internet. ;)

My family reunions are as much fun as cluster of boils on my ass. (Sorry for the imagery.)

For the last one I adopted Anon's approach, which failed miserably. My attitude had no effect on those around me, and I felt battered by not protecting myself from all the bullshit.

My $0.02? Expect the best and prepare for the worst.

Congrats on the 5K PR!

Sorry, anon, that was harsh! My point, which I failed to state clearly due to the short, poppy, last-minute nature of the post was not to say that I intentionally be reactionary to my family... on the contrary, I try my hardest to be patient. But I DO intend to rail against intolerance and ignorance, whether or not it is to any positive effect. I will not nod and smile to bigotry. Since my family has arrived here I have collected a few choice gems from them:

1) Couples who have premarital sex are damned to hell
2) Fags should have no rights
3) The new potential vaccination against HPV should be banned because it promotes promiscuity among young girls
4) All african males and gays should be, and I quote, CASTRATED to prevent the spread of aids...

My grandmother has called the bridegroom's mother a bitch and proceeded to gossip about his family, only to turn to me a few seconds later and whisper that they're talking about her over there, how dare they!

I have seen no fewer than four people cry on three seperate occasions and I have been here less than 24 hours.

And all this is fairly without cease. I think the word FIASCO nicely describes the situation.

Now... there's a reason my family lives all over this country and never has reunions...

By Blogger Lazy Lightning, at 8:52 AM, May 21, 2006

Yikes. May the patience be with you, assuming you aren't already damned to hell.
