I left work late on Friday, around 6:30, and as I was crossing the street to where my van was parked, I heard a man call out from a doorway. Unsure if they were talking to me, I looked over my shoulder and walked a few feet. Again, he said something and again I didn't quite understand what was being said or who it was being said to. My work isn't in an unsafe neighborhood, per se, but the University District is full of weirdos and I had parked right outside two of Seattle's dive-y-est bars. So I kept going. The third time, I heard him clearly.
"Hey, is your name Kat?"
He did look familiar. I walked over and apologized for not hearing him the first two times. He clearly remembered me from somewhere... but where?
As it turns out, he has a nearly photographic memory for names and faces. We worked together for the latter six months of my freshman year at the University of Oregon, which I spent as a consultant at the Computing Center beta-testing IP-Multicast software. He was in my department, and one of the suprisingly more socially functionl geeks there. I ended up leaving the CC and returning to be tech support for the less-specialized Microcomputing services for the rest of my college career (probably because the geeks at Micro were more socially functional). It surprises me to no end that he remembers me, partially because I'd like to think I've changed a bit since then and also because we knew each other for so short a time.
Nevertheless, it is strange that he's here in Seattle working across the street from me-- and that he happened to see (and recognize me) by chance. Funny, huh?
